Electric/Phone Outage
Sunday, November 20, 2006, 9:30AM - 2:00PM

The extended elecricity outage and telephone service outage in Buena Vista resulted in Internet service being down for over 4 hours. We discovered that our new DS3 equipment draws much more power than we expected and therefore the power back-up was not adequate for the length of the outage. However, with telco services also down, more power backup still would not have allowed us to utilize our DS3 and T1 connections to the Internet until those services were restored.

Over the next few weeks we will be rearranging and upgrading our power back-up system! We apologize for any inconvenience this outage may have caused. Thank you for your patience while we waited for the power to be restored.

PHASE 1 OF NEW FIBER DS3 UPGRADE COMPLETE!
October 1, 2006, 1:00AM

Status of Affected Connections:
Game Trail 900Mhz Wireless - Move Completed
BV Cupola 900Mhz Wireless - Move Completed
BV Cupola 2.4Ghz Wireless - Move Completed
DSL Customers using PPPoA - Move Completed

The first phase of our upgrade to the new fiber DS3 is complete! We sincerely apologize to those of you who were affected by the suddenness of this change. Our original plan was to continue the upgrades we started in July and have the DS3 in place by the end of December for the next phase of upgrades. However, two weeks ago we were unexpectedly notified that our second Internet connection would be turned off at midnight, September 30.

So, with the help of several companies including Front Range Internet, Advoda, Internap and Qwest, we were able to push the install date up to September 29. Even though several serious snags occurred along the way, the great people helping us just kept finding ways around the snags and kept pushing ahead. We'd like to send out a big THANK YOU to everyone who helped us accomplish the impossible. It seems that we may have just experienced the fastest DS3 install ever!

We especially want to thank the customers in the Buena Vista area for your patience and understanding about being down on Saturday while we worked through several complications in moving to the new circuit.

Thanks for being customers of MCW! We appreciate your business and will continue to work hard to provide you the best possible service.

Margie & Joe

INTERNET SERVICE RESTORED
Wednesday, May 31, 2006, 4:45PM

We have been told that different problems were found on two different circuits which connect the MCW network to the Internet backbone. One was repaired by replacing a cross-connect at the local telco central office and that circuit was brought back online about 3PM giving us about half of the normal bandwidth to the Internet. We have not yet been given any information on what repaired the other problem circuit.

Thank you for your patience while we waited for our circuits to be repaired by the telco. We apologize for the frustration and inconvenience caused by this outage.

INTERNET OUTAGE
Wednesday, May 31, 2006, 11:30AM

Our backbone provider is working with the telco's to determine where the circuit is broken. They have eliminated the possibility of a physical problem and believe they have narrowed it down to a Level 2 ATM Layer issue. We are calling them frequently requesting updates of any new info they can provide. We do not yet know if the problem is related to the fiber cut yesterday but we suspect it may be.

SERVICE RESTORED TO CENTRAL COLORADO
May 30, 2006, 8:00PM

Internet, cell phone and long distance services have been restored. The outage was caused by a construction project in eastern Colorado which took out an overhead fiber line. It affected Buena Vista, Salida, Walsenburg, Trinidad, Alamosa, Del Norte and South Fork among other central Colorado towns.

INTERNET, LONG DISTANCE, CELL SERVICE IN THIS REGION ARE DOWN
May 30, 2006, 4:30PM

It is our understanding that a fiber line was cut somewhere between Colorado Springs and Pueblo. This fiber cut is affecting towns in central and southeastern Colorado. It appears that all internet service, cell phone service, long distance service are down because of this fiber cut. We will update this page as we get more information.

We apologize for any inconvenience.

Thank you for your patience while we await the fiber repair between Colorado Springs and Pueblo.

Fiber Cut in Central Colorado Repaired

Friday, December 23, 2005, 8:45AM

Service to high-speed wireless customers was restored about 4:30AM this morning. DSL service came back up as well.

Service to MCW Dial-up customers and others routed through Salida was restored about 8:30AM.

Qwest is reporting that this widespread outage affecting Internet, telephone and long distance across central Colorado was caused by a fiber cut. A gas line crew cut and twisted the fiber carrying the OC48 over which most Internet and long distance services to the area run.

The fiber cut occurred just after 6:00PM Thursday evening. By 4:00AM Friday morning the cut had been located and repair had begun. Service was restored to MCW's T1's to Buena Vista about 4:30AM and we are told that other services in the area will continue to come up as more fiber strands are spliced. We are still waiting for our T1's to Salida to be repaired.

We apologize for any inconvenience caused by this outage. Thank you for your patience while we wait for the Qwest technicians to splice the fiber. As always, please do not hesitate to call when you have a problem or question.

Internet Connection Performance Restored
Thursday, December 1, 2005, 4:00AM

Testing on the circuit connecting the MCW network to the Internet backbone was conducted overnight. Although no specific problems were identified, the circuit is now performing normally! It appears that when the telco technicians restarted the equipment which carries our circuit in order to test it, it cleared whatever problem was interfering with data transfer.

Because testing required shutting down the connection completely for up to 4 hours, we instructed our backbone provider to perform the tests between midnight and 4AM. However, our logs show that the circuit went down from 10PM to 2AM. We apologize for the early testing and any inconvenience caused by the performance and outage.

Thanks for your patience while we waited for the testing and repair.

Margie & Joe

INTERNET OUTAGE FOR TESTING TONIGHT
12:00AM - 4:00AM
Thursday Morning, December 1, 2005

Since exactly 8:00AM this morning our system has appeared to be overloaded. After thoroughly analyzing the MCW network and searching for the cause of the overload without success, we called our backbone provider to ask for a test of our circuit and routing. Their initial tests show that there may be a problem with our main connection to the Internet backbone.

In order to fully test and repair the circuit, they will need to take it down for about an hour and a half between midnight and 4AM. Customers will be able to get this web page and connect to the mail server. However, customers will not be able to access the Internet during the testing and repair. Any email sent during the outage will be delivered when the circuit is turned back up.

Thank you for your patience! We apologize for any inconvenience caused by these problems.

Mt. Princeton Wireless Internet Site Repair Ongoing
Tuesday, September 6, 2005, 9:00AM

A technician on site at the Mt. Princeton antenna reports that service has been temporarily restored. It may go down intermittently as equipment is replaced. It appears that a large power surge blew out several surge protectors but they did their job and protected our equipment!

Wireless Internet Outage
in Central Chaffee County
Tuesday, September 6, 2005, 8:00AM

A technician is in route to the Mt. Princeton antenna site to determine the cause of the outage. It is affecting both MCW's wireless Internet sites as well as another company's pager service. It appears to be an extended power outage. However, Sangre de Cristo is not able to confirm that.

We will update this site as soon as we have any more information. Thank you for your patience. We apologize for any inconvenience caused by this outage.

INTERNET CONNECTION RESTORED!!!
Thursday, February 24, 2005, 9:00PM

Thank you very much for your patience while we waited for the circuits to be repaired.

INTERNET CONNECTION DOWN

Thursday, February 24, 2005, 8:17PM

The outage has been isolated to a DS3 in Colorado Springs. Qwest has verified that the fiber facilities are in tact and has turned the repair back over to the backbone provider's technicians.

Thursday, February 24, 2005, 6:25PM

We have been informed that the Qwest DS3 which carries our DS1's from Buena Vista and Salida to Denver is down. A Qwest technician was dispatched to the central office. Although we were told that an estimated time of repair was not available, we expect that the outage should not last much longer.

Thursday, February 24, 2005, 5:40PM

Although we have not yet been provided with an explanation for the outage, we have been in contact with our Internet backbone provider several times and have been assured that Qwest is working on the problem. It appears to be affecting our DS1 circuits in Buena Vista and Salida.

Thursday, February 24, 2005, 4:20PM

Our backbone provider has determined that the circuit is down somewhere between Buena Vista and Denver. They have contacted the telco who will test remotely and then dispatch a technician.

Thursday, February 24, 2005, 4:05PM

The provider of our backbone connection to the Internet is checking on the circuits right now. We will update this page as soon as we have more information about the outage. We do not yet know if there was a fiber cut, if a router in Denver went down or if a Qwest circuit is the cause.

Thank you for your patience while we wait for the circuits to be repaired.

Qwest DSL in Buena Vista UP
Wednesday, January 12, 2005, 10:00AM

Qwest reports that they were able to do a temporary fix to get DSL in Buena Vista up and running again. The problem was determined to be the same piece of equipment which first failed on December 29th. They have dispatched a technician with a new interface card for the Qwest DSL DSLAM in Buena Vista. He is traveling from Colorado Springs and should be here within 2 hours or so.

There will be a brief outage while the technician replaces the interface card. We estimate that outage should last no more than 5 to 15 minutes.

Thank you for your patience during the outage. Please do not hesitate to call if you have any other questions or whenever you have trouble with your service. Customer communication and feedback is the most important tool we have for providing you with the best possible service - even, as in this case, when the problem is beyond our control.

Qwest DSL in Buena Vista DOWN
Wednesday, January 12, 2005, 8:00AM

Qwest has confirmed that there is a problem with a DS3 which connects all Buena Vista DSL customers (including MCW's Qwest DSL customers as well as others) to the Qwest DSL system. This appears to be the same problem which occurred night before last and during the last week of December.

After an hour on the phone with the Qwest ATM repair department, I was transferred to a manager. I had numerous questions about the level of service Qwest has been providing to our mutual DSL customers as well as the mutual customers of Qwest and other ISP's. The answers I got were quite disturbing. Mainly, I wanted to know why such a widespread problem, affecting all ISP's in Buena Vista who offer Qwest DSL, was happening repeatedly and for extended periods without becoming enough of a priority to call out a technician. The answer given was that Qwest DSL is a consumer grade service and therefore the acceptable repair time period is 24 hours. So, even if they knew that all DSL customers in Buena Vista went down at 10:45PM last night, they might decide not to dispatch a technician for immediate repair. They consider it to be their option to wait until the technicians show up for work at their regular times the next morning.

The next question I have, which has not yet been answered, is why the default course of action when one of MCW's DSL customer's calls Qwest for help is to have the customer reset their DSL modem which removes all of MCW's settings from the customer's modem instead of checking to see if there is a widespread outage in our area. When the modem is reset, all programming is removed and the customer will not be able to get back online until we help them put the settings back in. It is a good idea to reboot the DSL modem (unplug from power, then plug back in) but do not reset the modem to factory settings by holding the reset button on the modem while booting it.

So, it is important to call MCW first anytime you have a problem. If it's after our normal business hours, you can leave a message on the machine which will call our cell phone. Also, our home number is Option #9 on the answering machine and we are listed in the phone book. Please don't hesitate to call us whenever you are having trouble.

Thanks for your patience. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Qwest DSL in Buena Vista Repaired
Monday, January 10, 2005, 7:40PM

It appears to be the same problem with Qwest's Buena Vista DSLAM which occurred last month. However, Qwest has not confirmed that. The outage lasted 2 hours 40 minutes.

Thanks for your patience. We apologize for any inconvenience.

WIRELESS INTERNET SERVICE RESTORED
Central Chaffee County and Johnson Village
Saturday, December 18, 2004, 10:30AM

Our technician was able to immediately restore service as soon as he reached the antenna site. It was, as we suspected, a power back-up unit which failed.

Thank you for your patience during the outage.

Margie & Joe

WIRELESS INTERNET OUTAGE
Central Chaffee County and Johnson Village
(Game Trail Area not Affected)
Saturday, December 18, 2004, 8:30AM

When power was restored to the Mt. Princeton site about 3:45AM this morning, our system came up briefly and then failed again. From the remote testing that we are able to do, it appears that two key pieces of equipment have no power. So, we believe that the failure is, ironically, the power back-up equipment. We also know that the power back-up equpipment did not provide any power during the outage since our equipment went down within seconds of the power outage. This also supports our theory that the problem is with the power back-up, not the data transmission equipment.

A technician is on his way to the site right now. We will update this message as soon as we have a report from him. Since the antenna location is up on the mountain at 10,800 feet, it will be later this morning before he reaches the site.

Thank you very much for your patience. We are working to restore service as soon as possible.

INTERNET CONNECTION IS UP!!!
Tuesday, December 7, 2004, 3:15

Our connection to the Internet backbone has been restored! Network performance may be slow for the next 1/2 hour to hour as our servers work to transmit data which has been waiting to go out. Also, email waiting to come into our network will be delivered over the next hour.

Thank you very much for your patience during this extremely frustrating outage. It is especially frustrating when the problem is beyond our control.

Although we know that a credit to your account does not make up for the inconvenience and frustration, we would like to offer a two day credit to any customer who wishes to receive it. Just send us an email to Billing@MountainComputerWizards.com or give us a call at 395-4444.

Tuesday, December 7, 1:15PM

Our Internet backbone provider is in the process of moving our circuits to a working DS3 which connects in San Francisco rather than Denver. They will first hook us up with only 1 T1 in order to get service restored sooner. So, when the Internet comes back up, it will be slow for a while. Once they get that much service restored, they will expand our bandwidth to it's normal capacity.

Tuesday, December 7, 10:45AM

We have finally been given more information about the outage. It is the result of emergency maintenance performed by Qwest last night. There were several circuits which did not come back up with the rest of the circuits including the DS3 on which our circuits reside. The telco's have not been able to repair the circuits. So, Savvis, MCI and Qwest are now working together to move our circuits to another node so that service can be restored. They still have not given us an estimated time of repair but our experience is that moving a circuit of this size should be possible within an hour or so.

Tuesday, December 7, 9:00AM

We have also learned that the outage is affecting several other ISP's who connect to the backbone of the Internet through Denver including a local ISDN provider.

Tuesday, December 7, 8:45AM

We are told that the telco's, Qwest and MCI, are working with our backbone provider, Savvis, and have identified a translation problem between the circuits. They have assured us that their top level engineers are working on the problem.

Tuesday, December 7, 7:15AM

We received an update that the outage is a result of a physical problem with the circuits and that Qwest technicians are working to repair the lines.

Tuesday, December 7, 4:50AM

Our backbone provider has isolated the problem which is in their main network center in Denver. The outage is affecting a large group of circuits there. Technicians have been dispatched to the site.

Tuesday, December 7, 4:40AM

The problem appears to be a large network outage in Denver. Technicians are working to confirm the exact location so that the circuits can be repaired.

Tuesday, December 7, 3:40AM

Our backbone connection provider has technicians working to determine the cause and location of the outage. We will update this page as soon as we have more information.

Thank you for your patience while we wait for the circuits to be repaired. We apologize for any inconvenience.

DSL Service Restored
Thursday, December 2, 2004

There was an outage overnight of the Qwest ATM circuit which connects MCW DSL customers to MCW and the Internet. Qwest restarted the IMA group at about 8:30AM this morning and service was restored.

We apologize for any inconvenience and have requested that the Qwest equipment causing this problem be replaced since this is not the first time that equipment has failed.

Margie & Joe

Web Site Service Restored
Tuesday, November 2, 7:15AM

Several problems with the main MCW web server yesterday led to an overnight outage of most web sites hosted by MCW. The web server was taken down for repairs from 10:00PM last night until 7:15AM this morning when service was restored. The server is back up and running and we are not aware of any further web site outages. However, if you experience any problems with a web site hosted by MCW, please let us know right away so that we can check it out.

We apologize for any inconvenience. Thanks for your patience overnight while we worked to restore web site service.

Dial-Up T1's Working Properly
Monday, October 18, 2004, 10:30AM

As soon as Qwest began testing the two T1's, they began working properly again. The Qwest technician believes that the testing caused the lines to be reset.

As always, please call us right away if you receive a busy signal or have any problems getting connected. Thanks for your patience while we waited for the lines to be repaired.

Margie & Joe

Dial-Up T1's Experiencing False Busy Signals
Monday, October 18, 2004, 9:30AM

Qwest is analyzing the problem to determine why some customers are receiving a very long pause, then a circuit busy when dialing one of the first two dial-up numbers, 395-4403 or 395-4405. When the lines on these two T1's fill up, Qwest is supposed to roll the calls over to the next T1's. However, that is not happening. The result is that when the main number is dialed, less then 48 of the 124 total lines are available.

Until Qwest is able to fix the problem, you may dial the alternate numbers:

395-6675 or 395-3235.

We will update this page as soon as we have new information about when Qwest expects to have the lines repaired. We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience.

Qwest DSL Circuits Repaired
Monday, October 4, 8:55AM

Qwest confirmed that they had to reseat the card in their ATM switch in Colorado Springs to which our circuits connect. They promised (again) that the card would be replaced this time. We were told that they were going to replace this same card the last time this problem occurred back in August. They assured us that, especially since we were not the only Qwest DSL Host ISP affected, the card would be replaced.

Qwest DSL Outage
Monday, October 4, 3:49AM

Qwest repair began testing at 6AM and dispatched technicians to Qwest central offices in Buena Vista and in Colorado Springs where our circuits connect to the Qwest DSL ATM switch at around 7AM.

Maintenence of San Francisco Circuits is Complete
Saturday, Sept. 11, 9:45AM

The telephone company which was moving large circuits in San Francisco, where we connect to the backbone of the Internet, has completed their project. The planned maintenence should have been completed by 8:00AM but they were almost 2 hours late in restoring service. We have been told that the delay was the result of mistakes made while reconnecting several DS3's including the one on which our circuits reside. In other words, they literally got their wires crossed.

We apologize for any inconvenience. Thank you for your patience while we waited for the circuits to be repaired.

Margie & Joe

Saturday, Sept. 11, 8:30AM

Our provider has clarified that it is not actually their router which is undergoing maintenance, it is the telco in California which is moving some large circuits that caused this outage. The telco has not yet explained why the outage has lasted longer than the planned maintenance window. We will update this page as soon as we have any new information.

Saturday, Sept. 11, 3:45AM - 8AM

The core router to which we connect in San Francisco is undergoing maintenance. Although we were first told that the maintenance should be finished by 7AM this morning, we have now been informed that the maintenance window was planned to last until 8AM.

We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience.

INTERNET CONNECTION UP & FASTER THAN EVER!
Monday, August 16, 11:00AM

Thank you for your patience while the circuit was moved. The outage lasted approximately 20 minutes and by 11AM we were up and running again. Although our circuits are now connected through San Francisco rather than Denver, response times from the Internet are much faster than before.

As always, feel free to send us your comments, suggestions and complaints. Feedback from our customers helps us to provide better service.

Margie & Joe

INTERNET CONNECTION REPAIR OUTAGE
Monday, August 16, 10:30AM - 11:00AM

Our Internet connection will go down for 20 to 30 minutes while our provider moves our circuits to another router in Denver. We had been told this would be done during early morning hours over the weekend and have just been informed that it was not. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience of this outage happening during business hours. However, we felt that if this move fixes the problem, it would be better to go ahead and get it done rather than continue to have circuit problems throughout the day.

We also want you to know that we already have contracts in hand to expand our capacity through a different provider. We feel that Savvis, which provides our current 4.5MB connections to the Internet, has been extremely negligent in handling these circuit problems. So, we will not purchase any further bandwidth from them.

Intermittent Internet Connection Delays
Monday, August 16, 9:30AM

Our circuits between Buena Vista and Denver are still experiencing intermittent problems. The result is that sometimes it is necessary to refresh a web page before it can be fully downloaded. E-mail is going in and out just fine.

It is extremely frustrating for us to experience continued circuit problems beyond our control. We have been assured that technicians worked over the weekend to test the circuits and isolate the problem but we have not yet been given any details of their activities. We appreciate your continued patience while we wait for the lines to be repaired.

T1 TESTING SCHEDULED

Sunday, August 15, 2 PM to 5 PM

Our Internet connection may be down for short periods while our provider does testing on the data transfer between Buena Vista and Denver. Our circuits have not been performing to full capacity. So, we gave our provider permission to do this intrusive testing in order that full performance of our T1's to the Internet can be restored by Monday. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your patience.

Margie & Joe

INTERNET CONNECTION RESTORED

Thursday, August 12, 5PM

Although our connection is operating normally again, our provider has escalated the problem to high-level engineers who have promised to review the logs, test the circuit from every angle and determine what the problem was. Thank you for your patience. It is frustrating to all of us when a problem occurs which is beyond our control. As always, please let us know right away if you experience any problems.

Margie & Joe

INTERNET CONNECTION OUTAGE

Thursday, August 12, 4:15PM

Our provider is narrowing down the location of the problem. So far, it is believed to be between Buena Vista and Denver. However, they have not yet determined exactly where.

Thursday, August 12, 3:30PM

Two of our T1's to the Internet are bouncing up and down. We are working with our provider to determine what the problem is. We'll update this page as soon as we have some information.

Mail Server Performance Update
Tuesday, August 3, 12:30PM

Delivery of some outgoing email was delayed this morning during the installation of special features. Currently, all email, incoming and outgoing, is being delivered normally. The final feature being installed is the ability for customers of other ISP's to authenticate and use our mail server for outgoing email. The completion of that feature should be finished within the next hour.

We will continue to monitor email on the new server very closely over the next few days. If you experience any problems at all with the new server, please let us know right away.

Thank you to everyone for your patience while we worked to build a new mail server and to everyone who helped us with the process by reporting their errors to us.

Margie & Joe

The new mail server is up, running and delivering email! There are still a few special functions which we are working on adding. For instance, if you are attempting to send secure email from another provider, you will need to use plain text authentication for now. Special features should be up and running by tomorrow.

Mail Server Testing in Progress
Monday, August 2, 6:30PM

The new mail server will be tested for the next hour or so. It may be brought up and down as the testing progresses.

Monday, August 2, 6:00PM

We are in the final stage of restoring email data from the old server to the new server. We expect this process to take a couple of hours.

NEW MAIL SERVER UPDATE:
Monday, August 2, 3:30PM

The new mail server has been built and configured. We are now in the process of moving customer data from the hard drives of the old server to the new one. There is so much data to be moved that we expect the process to take several hours. We expect to be fully functional by early evening.

Monday, August 2, 11:15AM

We have configured a temporary mail server for outgoing email in order to restore service faster. We are still working on repairs to the incoming mail server. So, customers can send email but cannot receive email yet.

SENDING WITHOUT RECEIVING IN OUTLOOK & OUTLOOK EXPRESS:

To send email from Microsoft Outlook Products without checking email (which will produce an error until POP service is restored), Click the vertical bar on the Right-hand side of the Send/Recieve Button and choose, "Send All." Most other email programs have separate buttons for sending and receiving so that it is easy to send only. Please give us a call if you need help using the temporary outgoing mail server.

Monday, August 2, 10:00AM

The repairs to the mail server are more serious than we originally anticipated. The mail server may be down for more than an hour. We will update this page with any new information.

Thank you for your patience while we make repairs!

Mail Delivery Delays
Monday, August 2, 9:00AM

The mail server has been experiencing delays in mail delivery on and off for the past 24 hours. All mail sent yesterday, Sunday, should now be delivered. Today, as we make further repairs to the mail server, we expect several outages of 5 to 15 minutes each.

If you are experiencing any problems, please do not hesitate to call for more information. We are working to restore mail service as quickly as possible.

PLANNED OUTAGE TONIGHT
Stress Testing on DS1's Scheduled
Sunday, July 11, 2004, 1AM to 3AM

MCW Network will be Up but
Internet will be Down During Testing

As a result of the two, one-minute outages at 5:45AM and 9:45AM this morning, our DS1 provider will be stress testing our circuits for about an hour during the three hour window tonight.

During this time, our customers will be able to connect and use any servers on the MCW network but will not be able to access the Internet.

Thanks for your patience while the circuits are tested!

Margie & Joe

INTERNET CONNECTION RESTORED
Thursday, June 17, 9:45PM

The Qwest technician who was being dispatched has been cancelled since service was restored. However, our circuits will be closely monitored throughout the weekend. Our provider will be working closely with the telco to assure that service is stablized.

Thank you for your patience while we waited for the lines to be repaired. If you have any further problems, please let us know.

Margie & Joe

INTERNET DOWN
Thursday, June 17, 7:45PM

The connection from the MCW network to the Internet is currently down. Our provider has issued a trouble ticket with Qwest to determine what the problem is.

We have confirmed that Qwest technicians have been dispatched to determine where the outage is. We still suspect that the problem is somewhere between Buena Vista and Denver.

We will update this page as soon as we have new information. Thank you for your patience while we wait for Qwest to repair the lines.

Margie & Joe

INTERNET CIRCUIT UPDATE
Friday, June 11, 2004, 9:30 AM

The circuits which connect MCW to the Internet are still being monitored and appear stable. However, we have not yet gotten an acceptable answer from Qwest as to why they had problems, why the response time was slow and what exactly was wrong. We were told to expect a Qwest technician who never showed up. So, despite the current stable condition of the lines, we are not convinced that Qwest had adequately performed their duties and are still awaiting an explanation. Since Qwest has not been forthcoming about the outage, our provider has formally issued a request for an explanation.

INTERNET CIRCUIT UPDATE
Thursday, June 10, 2004, 1:37 PM

Although we do not yet have a definitive answer on the cause of the outages today, we have been told that there are other high-speed connections in the area which are also having problems. We have been assured, again, that Qwest technicians are working hard to find, repair and prevent future problems.

While our Internet connection was down, email was being held on our server, waiting to go out, and email was being held on other servers out on the Internet, waiting to come into our network. As soon as the Internet connection came back up, the mail servers began transferring inbound and outbound email. So, all email coming in and going out should be delivered by now. If you have an important email which you need to know was delivered, give us a call and we can check the logs to see if it was received by the destination's server.

Thanks for your continued patience while we waited for the repairs to be completed.

INTERNET CIRCUITS RESTORED
Thursday, June 10, 2004, 11:00 AM

We have not yet been notified that Qwest has completed their repairs. We are expecting a Qwest technician to arrive in our office for more testing.

INTERNET CONNECTION DOWN
Thursday, June 10, 2004, 9:50 AM

Qwest technicians are working to repair the equipment right now. They have not given us an estimated time of repair.

INTERNET CIRCUITS RESTORED
Thursday, June 10, 2004, 9:00 AM

The circuits are up and running now. We have requested that Qwest continue monitoring the circuits and checking the equipment to be sure that it is fully repaired.

INTERNET CONNECTION DOWN
Thursday, June 10, 2004, 8:50 AM

We now have a better explanation from the telephone company for the outage: There is loss of signal on the smart jack to which our T1's are connected. They have escalated the tickets and we are awaiting the arrival of a Qwest technician.

Thanks again for your patience while we wait for the circuits to be repaired.

INTERNET CIRCUITS RESTORED
Thursday, June 10, 2004, 8:35 AM

We are still waiting to hear why our circuits between MCW and Denver went down and have instructed our provider not to allow the phone company to close the trouble ticket until we have a detailed explanation of the cause of this outage.

Thursday, June 10, 2004, 8:30 AM

We have received a call from our provider letting us know that a telco technician is testing the circuits between MCW and Denver right now. We hope to have new information soon.

Unfortunately, this problem is completely out of our control since it is not a problem with our system. If the outage turns out to be the result of a fiber cut, it may be several hours before the telephone company can repair it. However, if the problem is equipment, they should be able to either re-route our circuits around the problem or use available back-up equipment to repair the circuits within an hour or so.

There was a brief interruption of service at 6AM for about 10 minutes. Then, at 7:30AM, our Internet connection went down completely. A ticket was opened with the telephone company to determine why the circuits which connect our network to the Internet are down.

All of our servers are up and running. So, you may send and recieve email within our network. However, email going out to other servers on the Internet will be held in queue until the Internet connection is restored.

We will update this page as soon as we have more information. Thank you for your patience while we wait for the circuits to be repaired.

Margie & Joe

INTERNET CONNECTION RESTORED
Tuesday, June 8, 2004, 11:45AM
Our Internet connection was down for about 40 minutes. We are still waiting to hear back from the telephone company for a reason for the outage.

Thanks for your patience while we waited for the lines to be repaired.

Game Trail Broadband Outage

Friday, June 4, 11:00AM

Yesterday afternoon, the Game Trail wireless broadband network began experiencing problems and finally went down completely. We have replaced several pieces of equipment in that system as well as changed some of the routing and it is now up and running.

However, we are still not satisfied with the performance of that system. So, this weekend we will be testing new antennas. That means there will be some downtime. We will make that downtime as short as possible. There will likely be several outages of 15 to 45 minutes at a time.

Thanks for your patience while we work to improve the network!

Internet Connection Restored
Friday, April 23, 2004, 11:45AM

Our provider is contacting the telephone company to find out the reason for the outage.

Power and Telephone Outages in Buena Vista
Friday, April 23, 2004

Extended power and telephone outages overnight combined with circuit breaker failure when the power was restored caused numerous Internet outages. Although we are prepared for many kinds of failures such as power outages, our system could not handle the multiple failures that happened last night.

When the power went out initially, our battery back-ups took over. However, they are designed to handle the services for a few hours only. When the power was restored, our circuit breaker flipped. So, the batteries were not recharged in between the power outages as expected. During the night our phone lines also went down, so monitoring systems as well as our customers could not alert us of the outage. Once we arrived on the scene (thanks to our 4-wheel drive customer who picked us up at home since our road hadn't been plowed yet), we had problems getting the circuit breaker to work properly. As you can see, this was a very unusual situation.

By 9:30AM this morning, our services were working again. However, we have had several brief outages on our 3MB Internet connection. This is likely caused by problems Qwest is having with the lines that carry all the data from our ISP to the Internet.

Please do not hesitate to call if your Internet service is not working properly. Thank you for your patience while we make repairs!

Internet Connection Outage
Friday, April 23, 2004, 10:50AM

Our connection to the Internet is currently down. Customers connected through MCW can access any servers on our network but cannot access any servers out on the Internet. We expect that this outage is caused by Qwest lines which are down somewhere between here and Denver.

Bandwidth Upgrade Complete
Tuesday, April 20, 2004

As more and more customers choose to connect to the Internet through MCW with broadband such as high-speed wireless or DSL, our need for a larger connection to the Internet has grown. So, today we completed another upgrade - we doubled the bandwidth on our connection to the Internet. This will allow us to continue growing while continuing to provide our current customers with the best possible service.

Margie & Joe

Brief Internet Outage
Tuesday, April 20, 2004, 11:45AM - 11:53AM

Our Internet connection was down for about 5 minutes while we switched to a more robust connection. This change will double the amount of bandwidth available to the Internet!

We apologize for any inconvenience caused by this outage. We were not aware that the upgrade would require us to be down for a few minutes. Thanks for your patience while we work to provide you with the best Internet service possible.

All Dial-Up Lines are Working Again
Monday, March 8, 2004, 9:00PM

The Qwest technician was dispatched to Buena Vista and all 120 dial-up lines are working again. 24 of the lines were down beginning at about noon today. However, the extra lines were not needed until 6:00PM tonight when prime time on the busiest night of the week started.

As always, if you get a busy signal on our system, please let us know right away. We have plenty of dial-up lines for our customers. So, if you get a busy signal, there is a problem.

We apologize for any inconvenience. Thanks for your patience while we waited for the lines to be repaired.

Transition to New T1 Nearing Completion
Thursday, January 22, 2004, 7:00PM

We are in the process of switching to a new Internet connection to accommodate our new bvcolorado customers as well as the increasing number of DSL and Wireless customers. Overnight we changed the IP addresses of about 1500 domain names and servers on our network. Unfortunately, there were a few glitches in the process and we have had intermittent outages over the last day.

Since this afternoon our network has been functioning properly and our customers have been able to browse the Internet and send email. However, we have been working with our provider to get them to route traffic down to us on the new T1. So, others out on the Internet have not been able to reach our network this afternoon. We expect the changes on our provider's system will correct the traffic flow into our network and all should be back to normal by tomorrow morning.

We apologize for any inconvenience caused by these changes. Please let us know right away when you experience any problems that are not reported on this web page.

Thanks for your patience while we work to upgrade our network!

Additional Phone Lines Installed
Wednesday, January 21, 2004

Last week 24 more dial-up lines were installed and tested to accomodate our new BVColorado.com customers. However, we discovered Monday evening that the new lines were not available as part of the regular dial-up hunt group. So, even though the extra lines were working, they were not available to our dial-up customers. We had busy signals off and on during a 30 minute period Monday night and during a 15 minute period Tuesday afternoon.

Today, we worked with Qwest and believe that the roll-over feature has been added to our lines. You should not receive any busy signals. If you do, please let us know right away so that we can contact Qwest and have the lines corrected.

Thanks,

Margie & Joe

NETWORK MAINTENANCE
Mail Server Will Be Offline for 15-20 Minutes
Wednesday, January 7, 2004, 5:45AM

We will be adding hardware to the Mail Server this morning between 5:45AM and 7:00AM. The mail server will be offline for 15 or 20 minutes while the hardware is being installed. Thanks for your patience while we perform upgrades!

Dial-Up Lines Repaired
Monday, December 1, 2003
Qwest has repaired the 2 Dial-In T1's which were down for about 1-1/2 hours this afternoon. The other 2 Dial-In T1's were functioning fine during the outage but had to be dialed directly since the outage affected roll-over as well as dial-in. Please do not hesitate to call if you have any questions. Thank you for your patience.

Wireless Outage
Thursday, October 16, 2003
All High-Speed Wireless customers served off of the antennas on Mt. Princeton experienced an outage of service from 9:10AM to 9:50AM this morning because of an electricity outage. Thanks to our electric company, Sangre De Cristo, for fixing it so quickly!

E-Mail Server Running Properly Again
Friday, August 29, 2003, 9:00AM
We experienced a mail delivery outage last night and early this morning. The mail server is set-up to only accept messages (incoming and outgoing) if they can be scanned for viruses. When the automatic virus scanning update did not work properly yesterday evening, the mail server stopped accepting messages for delivery. Any message sent durning this time was returned to the sender or put in a queue for later delivery. All mail sent during this time will have been delivered or returned by now.

We apologize for any inconvenience. Please do not hesitate to call us at home in a case like this. Since the mail server itself was up and running, our monitoring software did not alert us that there was a problem. Our home telephone number is always on the answering machine here at work.

We appreciate your feedback!

Thanks,

Margie & Joe

Dial-up Lines Repaired
4:00PM Thursday, August 21, 2003

Qwest dispatched a technician from Colorado Springs who has been working on our phone lines for several hours. One quarter of our dial-up lines have been unavailable for most of the day. The lines appear to be working fine now, with all lines available and no busy signals. Apparently, ours was one of several T1s in the area which were having trouble.

Thank you for your patience today!

As always, please report any problems right away. Your feedback helps us provide a better service.

Thanks,

Margie & Joe

Unexplained Busy Signals
9:00AM Thursday, August 21, 2003

Although we have plenty of extra dial-up lines, several customers have reported busy signals over the last couple of days. We have reported the problem to Qwest and are waiting for them to determine why they have not been routing incoming calls to our open dial-up lines correctly.

IF YOU EVER GET A BUSY SIGNAL ON OUR SYSTEM, LET US KNOW! We make sure that we have plenty of dial-up lines. So, if you get a busy signal, there is a problem.

If you have ever gotten busy signals when dialing our system, please send us a quick email stating when and for how long. This will help us in dealing with Qwest.

New Virus Advisory
Wednesday, August 20, 2003

A new variant of the SoBig virus is running rampant on the Internet. The virus forges return email addresses when it sends itself out so that it is very hard to determine whose computer actually sent the virus. We are blocking the virus on our mail server by blocking all of the subject lines used by the virus. Unfortunately, this may block some legitimate emails. However, this virus is so aggressive that we believe it is necessary to block by subject until we are able to find a better solution.

Emails with the following Subject lines will be blocked:

  • Your details
  • Thank you!
  • Re: Thank you!
  • Re: Details
  • Re: Re: My details
  • Re: Approved
  • Re: Your application
  • Re: Wicked screensaver
  • Re: That movie

If someone with your email address in their address book has been infected with the virus, you may have received hundreds of emails yesterday evening and early this morning. If you need help deleting them, please let us know.

Please call if you have any questions.

Internet Worm Advisory
Tuesday, August 13, Noon

A very aggressive Internet worm has been infecting computers connected to the Internet. It spreads itself to vulnerable computers running Microsoft Windows NT, 2000 or XP. It does not spread by email. It simply needs a network connection to spread. If you have not kept your Microsoft critical updates up-to-date, your computer may be vulnerable.

Symptoms of infection include your computer rebooting on its own.

To determine if your computer has been infected, Press Ctrl-Alt-Del. (Hold down the Ctrl and Alt keys while you press the Del key once.) In the Task Manager, check the processes to see if msblast.exe is running. If so, the following link may be of help.

CERT Advisory and MSBlast Information

MCW Dial-up customers have been protected from this worm by blocks we set on our routers and other equipment as of Noon, Tuesday, August 12. If you think your computer was infected prior to this time or your computer has been connected to other Internet providers who are not blocking the worm, feel free to give us a call with your questions.

Internet Services Back to Normal
Wednesday, February 5, 2003, 8:00AM

E-Mail and Web Site services all appear to be working well this morning. However, with all the changes we made yesterday, there is a good possibility that we will come across loose ends that need to be fixed. So, if you notice anything out of the ordinary, please let us know right away.

Internet Service Availability Continues to Improve
Tuesday, February 4, 2003, 8:15PM

Many servers across the Internet are now exchanging email with our server. Over the next few hours we expect most others to begin responding.

Here is what happened: In order to be assured of a T1 for our newly founded ISP last year, we took over an abandoned MCI Worldcom circuit. Since the Colorado Hi-Speed Fiber Network had not yet been delivered, we were told to expect a wait of 3 to 6 months if we ordered a new T1 from another provider. However, we have not been completely happy with the performance of MCI Worldcom.

So, now that there is plenty of bandwidth to the valley, we asked our upstream provider, Mercury Networks, to order a different T1 for us through Sprint. It was arranged that the two T1's would be up and running side by side for several weeks while we carefully moved each piece of the network from one T1 to the other. Since we've been through this process of switching T1's and IP addresses twice before, we expected a smooth changeover.

Suddenly, MCI turned off the old T1 two weeks early. When they were contacted 15 minutes after turning off the circuit, they said they would be happy to turn it back on but it would take 30 days to reprogram it.

So, while Mercury Networks worked to find an interim solution to route our old IP addresses across the new T1, we began reprogramming all of our servers to use the new T1. This involved several hundred domain names and over 1,000 IP addresses spread across our network on about a dozen different servers and routers.

By early afternoon we had dial-up working and customers could access the Internet. However, because it takes hours for IP address changes to propagate across the Internet, other services such as web sites and email were still not working. By evening, the propogation had begun to take place. So, little by little, as servers across the net updated their DNS, they were able to access our web sites and mail server.

Although the outage was beyond our control, we would like to offer a credit to our customers. If you would like to request a credit for up to 2 days of service, just email: Billing@MountainComputerWizards.com.

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this outage has caused. Thanks for your patience while we worked on the solution.

Margie & Joe

Mail Server is Up and Running!
Monday, February 3, 2003, 6:45PM

What a day! The mail server is back up and running after replacing one of its hard drives. No data was lost.

Mail service will be slow for the next few hours as the server works to catch up. All of the email sent to our customers over the past few hours has been waiting in queue on other servers across the Internet. Now that those servers are able to deliver the email to our server, it is coming in fast and furiously. So, response from the server will be sluggish for at least several hours.

We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.

Thanks to everyone for your patience!

Margie & Joe

Power Has Been Restored
Monday, February 3, 2003, 9:50AM

Thanks to Sangre De Cristo for getting us back up and running so quickly! It appears that only two businesses in the area were affected.

Qwest has completed the repair of the rollover from the 2nd group of dial-up lines to the 3rd group. We will be watching closely to be sure the lines now work correctly. Please let us know if you experience any problems.

New Phone Lines are Being Repaired
Wednesday, October 23, 2002, 5:45PM
(3rd Group of lines not yet available)

Although the additional dial-up lines which Qwest delivered last week appeared to work fine, it was impossible to know for sure until all the previous lines filled up. Unfortunately, the first 2 groups of lines filled up tonight and did not roll over to the new lines. Qwest is working on repairing the problem right now.

PLEASE NOTE:   WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO CALL OR   EMAIL US
      WITH ANY PROBLEMS AT ALL!
If you get a busy signal, that's a problem!

Our logs show that we may have had busy signals for 30 seconds to 2 minutes at a time several times this last week, but no one reported the problem. Please let us know anytime you experience a problem so that we can provide you with the best service possible!

Thanks!

Completion of Phone Line Installation
Scheduled for Wednesday, October 16, 2002, 11:00AM

There should not be any outages associated with adding the new phone lines. However, problems with the roll-over from one set of phone lines to another are not uncommon during the installation and testing of new lines.

If you experience any problems whatsoever, please let us know right away.

Thanks,

Margie & Joe

Phone Line Problems in Buena Vista

Wednesday, August 28, 2002, 11:00AM

Qwest just called to report that there have been problems with the Mt. Princeton microwave since yesterday afternoon. Evidently the cloud cover delayed the helicopters from reaching the antenna. Qwest reports that the repair is now complete. Be sure to let us know if you have any problems with your Internet connection.

Wednesday, August 28, 2002, 10:00AM

We have not had any reports of problems after 9:00AM. So, the problems seem to have been resolved. We are still waiting to hear back from Qwest for an explanation of the problems.

Wednesday, August 28, 2002, 9:00AM

Customers in many areas of Buena Vista are reporting getting disconnected from voice phone calls and from dial-up Interne The problem began about 8:30 this morning. We have contacted Qwest and are awaiting a response. As soon as we know more about this problem, we will post a message here.

If you experienced a disconnection this morning, whether it was while talking on the phone or while you were on the Inter please send a quick report to us by using the Feedback Form or e-mail us at Feedback@RockyMountains.net Include where you live so that we can give Qwest a better idea of the areas affected by this problem.

Thanks,

Margie & Joe

Alternate Dial-Up Number:
395-4405

Please hang up and reconnect using
the alternate number if you know how.

If you know how to temporarily change your dial-up number, it would be a great help to us if you would hang up and redial using the alternate number above. If you don't know how to do this, don't worry. We just need about half the customers to use the new number and half to stay on the original, 395-4403, dial-up number.

Thanks very much for your help while we wait for Qwest to fix the rollover!

Margie & Joe

T1 Outage

Our connection to the Internet was down for several hours. We are still waiting for a report from our backbone provider on what the problem was.

Virus Scanning Implemented
Sunday, June 23, 2002

E-mail is now being scanned for viruses. When a virus is detected, the infected e-mail is not delivered but is archived. A warning is sent to both the sender and recipient notifying them that an infected message was sent but not delivered. Most messages containing viruses were sent by the virus and do not contain a needed message. However, if you determine that you need content from an infected message, contact us and we will be happy to assist you.

Network Maintenance Update
Sunday, June 23, 2002

We've decided to reschedule the planned maintenance and will update our web page as we get closer to the move.

Network Maintenance & Virus Scanning
Sunday, June 23, 2002

1. Network Maintenance Scheduled Today Between 1PM and 3PM
We will be moving our servers closer to our phone line connections this afternoon and this will cause several, very brief, outages. Each service will be down for about 5 minutes. For example, dial-up will be down for 5 minutes, then web sites will be down for 5 minutes, then e-mail will be down for 5 minutes.

If you experience any problems for more than 20 minutes, please let us know immediately. You can give us a call at 395-4444. We will be in the office during and after the move to assure that all servers are back up and running properly.

2. Virus Scanning on E-Mail is Now Fully Active
All e-mail to or from our main mail servers, POP.RockyMountains.net and SMTP.RockyMountains.net, is now scanned for viruses. The virus data file is updated every 24 hours.

When a virus is detected, the e-mail is not delivered. However, a warning is sent from Mail-DAEMON@rockymountains.net to both the sender and recipient of the infected e-mail to let both parties know that an e-mail was sent but not delivered because of a virus.

If you have any questions or experience any problems, please let us know.

Thanks for your understanding and patience while we work to improve our service!

Margie & Joe
